Resources (Early Number Sense, Early Addition and Subtraction)

Fosnot & Dolk, (2002). Young Mathematicians at Work; Constructing Number Sense, Addition and Subtraction. Heinemann Press. This book is an overview of the development of early number sense and operations through context and models.  Discusses the landscape of learning for K-2 in detail.

Fosnot, C. T. & Uittenbogaard, W. (2007)a. Minilessons for Early Addition and Subtraction. Heinemann Press. This book is a yearlong resource filled with number strings from early quick images, to math rack (rekenrek) strings covering addition and subtraction under 20.

Fosnot, C. T. & Uittenbogaard, W. (2007)b. Minilessons for Extending Addition and Subtraction. Heinemann Press. This book is a yearlong resource filled with number strings on multi-digit addition and subtraction using the open number line.

Resources (Multiplication and Division)

Fosnot & Dolk (2001). Young Mathematicians at Work; Multiplication and Division. Heinemann Press. This book describes in detail the big ideas, strategies and models that children explore while learning multiplication and division. It details how to use investigations in context to develop important models like the array and the ratio table.

Resources (Fractions, Decimals and Percents)

Fosnot & Dolk (2002). Young Mathematicians at Work; Constructing Fractions, Decimals and Percent. Heinemann Press. This book describes in detail mathematical development in rational number, and how to use investigations and number strings to develop strong understanding of complex fractional concepts.

Imm, Fosnot, & Uittenbogaard (2007). Minilessons for Operations with Fractions, Decimals and Percents. Heinemann Press. This book is the last in the minilessons series, and provides number strings to exploring the four operations with fractions, decimals and percents. It draws upon several models including the double open number line, ratio table, and clock.

Harris (2011). Building Powerful Numeracy for Middle and High School Students. Heinemann Press. Harris shows how to use number strings with middle school and high school students, adapting them to teach algebra, pre-algebra, even calculus. Wonderful work for developing powerful, sense-making routines that simultaneously do intervention.

Empson & Levi (2011). Extending Children’s Mathematics; Fractions and Decimals. Heinemann Press. Powerful work from some of the authors of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) in fractions.
